Energy Efficiency Assistance for Houses

Pilot completed. Program may return in 2008.

Through REEP, Waterloo Region is part of a pilot project for the Ontario Power Authority (OPA). The initiative provides free energy audits and free retrofits for income-eligible single family households.

The pilot was completed on December 31, 2007. Depending on the findings, the project may return later in 2008.

Program Description:

  • Audit and installation of “basic” energy saving measures such as Compact Fluorescent Light Bulbs, low-flow showerheads, faucet aerators, water heater insulation, pipe wrap, etc.
  • Installation of “extended” measures, including replacement of old refrigerators, draft-proofing of the home and adding insulation to walls, crawl spaces and attics.
  • Public education for occupants of ways to further save energy through their behaviour in the home

The objective of the program is to save electricity as part of the Ontario Power Authority’s conservation target of 100 MW in the low-income sector. This project provides eligible homeowners with a comprehensive, one-stop-service. WRGS energy advisors conduct a complete energy assessment of the home, install the basic measures, and recommend improvements. The advisor also suggests energy conservation practices that homeowners can adopt. Following this initial visit, contractors supervised by WRGS will install the recommended extended measures, described above. WRGS will verify work done and report the savings to the Ontario Power Authority and other partners.
